Dr. Drake Patrick will address how schools can best prepare to meet the unique needs of military-connected children and their families as they transition between K-12 school settings.  She will share strategies both families and schools can engage in to provide a welcoming, supportive community for families of both Veterans and active duty military members.

Jennifer Drake Patrick, PhD
Assistant Professor, Center for Social Equity Through Science Education

George Mason University

Jennifer Drake Patrick is an Assistant Professor in the Literacy Program in the George Mason University School of Education, College of Education and Human Development. She earned her Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Florida.  Jennifer has worked in schools that serve high populations of military children, including serving on the Fairfax County Military Process Action Team. She spearheaded the Operation Educate the Educators Task Group in the College of Education and Human Development which resulted in an online training module for preservice teachers to increase understanding about working with military-connected youth.  Jennifer is married to a retired Naval officer and they have 3 school-aged children.

Troy Lowery
Director of Student Outreach, College of Humanities and Social Sciences
George Mason University

Troy Lowery is the Director of Student Outreach within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). He serves as the primary point of contact for prospective student visits and orientation of incoming CHSS students at events planned by our Mason partner offices (Admissions, New Student and Family Programs). He also works alongside the Associate Dean and the College’s development team to coordinate the selection of recipients for several merit and need based scholarships, as well as the planning and coordination of small and large-scale events. Troy is a United States Marine Corps veteran.
