The Military, Veterans, & Families Initiative

Research

George Mason University is an R1 institution, awarded the highest Carnegie Classification for our research activity. A significant portion of this research focuses on issues relevant to the military and veteran community. Ranging from studies of family transitions to battlefield technology, George Mason conducts high-quality research that improves our understanding of challenges and opportunities experienced by the military, service members, veterans, and their families.

For the past 5 years, the single largest federal sponsor of research at George Mason has been the US Department of Defense. Significant funding has also been obtained from agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and NASA.

Moreover, George Mason is uniquely positioned to promote partnerships with a range of relevant agencies. Some examples include:

  • Project Go – Funded through Summer 2024, Project GO provided a fully funded opportunity for ROTC cadets to engage in immersive language programs in Chinese or Korean, combined with intercultural experiences.
  • GMU-AFCENT Partnership – In Summer 2023, George Mason University formalized a partnership with US Air Forces Central (Headquarters Ninth Air Force) for joint research, rapid capability development, warfighter training, and education in support of mission readiness for the US Air Force.

George Mason remains committed to advancing efforts like these and expanding our support of research in support of service members, veterans, and their families.
